End of Days. A Byzantine Last Judgement from Hólar

Arc Hall, October 20, 2007 - May 25, 2008

An exhibition of unique medieval carved boards from Bjarnastaðahlíð in Skagafjörður in north Iceland. The boards are believed originally to have formed part of a huge Last Judgement scene in the Byzantine style, probably in the cathedral built at Hólar in the early 12th century.

The exhibition recounts the history of the boards and seeks to reconstruct the original complete Last Judgement scene. The boards were later used to roof a turf farmhouse at Bjarnastaðahlíð, and ultimately came to the National Museum in 1924. They have recently been cleaned, repaired and conserved.
