The National Museum of Iceland’s permanent exhibition, Making of a Nation - Heritage and History in Iceland, is intended to provide insight into the history of the Icelandic nation from the Settlement to the present day.

The aim is to cast light on the Icelanders’ past by placing the cultural heritage preserved by the National Museum in a historical context, guided by the question: What makes a nation?

An exhibition by photographer Einar Falur Ingólfsson, who has retraced the steps of British artist/antiquarian W.G. Collingwood on a ten-week tour of Iceland in 1897. The exhibition is part of Reykjavik Arts Festival.

In 2004 the National Museum of Iceland stood at a crossroad. The museum reopened its doors after extensive refurbishment and a modernised museum now offers a wide variety of services to its guests.
